Our approach

For over 70 years, Oxfam Australia been working to create a world without poverty. A world where everyone can live free of the inequalities that hold them back.

That’s why we strive tirelessly every day to deliver life-saving humanitarian relief, run long-term anti-poverty projects and create campaigns for meaningful change.

We work alongside communities, local partner organisations and a global network of supporters to tackle the root causes of poverty and create a more equal world.

Here’s what that looks like.

Humanitarian Aid

When a crisis hits, we’re there to provide communities with vital aid to save lives.

By working with a global network of local partner organisations, we’re able to respond quickly with exactly what’s needed. Working directly with communities means we can tailor our response to needs as they emerge, protecting those most at risk.

Once the immediate threat is over, we’re there with tools, resources and support to help communities rebuild their lives and protect against future calamities.

Advocacy and Campaigning

We believe that the only way to truly end poverty is to challenge the systems that keep power and money concentrated to a small few.

Whether it’s unfair tax systems, climate policy that favours polluters or corporations denying their workers a living wage, these systems stand in the way of the world we all want.

Our campaigns activate and mobilise people to dismantle the power structures that sustain poverty, creating a fairer world for all.

Long Term Development

To tackle the inequalities that keep people in poverty, we need to lay the groundwork for a better future today.

Our local partner-led approach helps us to understand the challenges facing the communities we work with to develop projects that will create lasting change for generations to come.

This can look like helping communities adopt more climate-resilient farming practices, running LGBTQIA+ inclusion workshops, supporting women to lead or connecting First Peoples with politicians to create change. Whatever the project, our aim is always to work with communities to tackle the root causes of poverty.

Oxfam Australia works as part of a global confederation led by Oxfam International, with 21 members and affiliates. This allows us to combine resources, respond quickly to emergencies and leverage strengths and expertise to achieve our shared vision of a world without poverty.
