By the fifth attack, Werem and her family had to flee
In Burkina Faso, the West African country she calls home, armed conflict has been wreaking havoc on innocent families over the last decade, leaving up to half a million people displaced from their homes.
Four times, armed groups had come to Werem’s village. Four times, she and her family had survived, gathered their strength, and rebuilt.
But when her village was attacked for the fifth time, Werem wasn’t so fortunate. Lucky to escape with their lives, they left behind everything they’d worked so hard for. Their homes. Their possessions. Their livelihoods.
