A wake up call for charities: Helen Szoke on ABC RN

Helen Szoke spoke to Fran Kelly this morning, on ABC Radio National.

“All charities need to be absolutely alert and active in looking at how we’re recruiting people, how we’re vetting them and how we’re actually ensuring the culture of the workplace in the countries we work in is one that upholds our values or code of conduct” she said.

And particularly the humanitarian principles we sign up to. It’s a wake-up call for charities. We’ve spent many years strengthening our safeguarding procedures – so this is how we vet staff, train staff and what complaint mechanisms we put in place, and auditing mechanisms.

It’s such a critical issue – we have to rise to the challenge. None of us can be defensive, or complacent.”
