Elyse has been volunteering with our very own Volunteer Engagement Team since September 2016. Here’s her story so far.
What led you to start volunteering with Oxfam?
I have always been very passionate about trying to make a difference in the lives of others, and Oxfam has always been an organisation that I have admired in this area. So when the opportunity arose to help them out in a volunteer role, I was quick to take it. I feel extremely blessed to be here.
What do you feel is the most important issue we work on?
Of course I think that every part of Oxfam’s work is very important. For me in particular, being an economics major at University, I am extremely interested in the advocacy work that Oxfam is doing with regards to tax havens, and what could be done with extra money at a federal level if corporations were taxed efficiently.
What does your volunteering role involve?
Presently, I am volunteering with Emma Durkin in the Sydney office as part of the Volunteer Engagement Team. For this, I am responsible for assisting her with making sure the office runs smoothly, that everyone access to the correct supplies, and of course, tea and coffee to keep the team hydrated! I also help to manage Better Impact, related volunteer records, and the WHS training for new volunteers.
What do you gain out of volunteering?
Volunteering is a really important way to be part of a community of people who are passionate about helping. Being in the office, I have been able to talk to the amazing staff about what they do, and how crucial every single person is to making sure that Oxfam functions effectively, and achieves what it does.
What would you tell anyone interested in volunteering at Oxfam
I would say that volunteering with Oxfam is a really incredible way to be part of something bigger than just yourself. You contribute, feel valued and get to meet some amazing people who are doing incredible things to make the world a better place.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
When I am not volunteering I am studying the University of Sydney or working at a café. Aside from that, I spread what is left of my time between yoga, sewing and reading.
