Committed to a better life

English / Bahasa
I feel like a victim of my dismissal. From 2006 I was sacked from PT Panarub. To this day I feel my life has lost its routine, after having worked so many years as a producer of adidas. But I still believe I can take action to create a better life for myself and others.

The thought has raced through my mind that I should show the world that I also want to be like those who have a place in life in which they can still have hope, hold life expectations and possess the opportunity to find decent work. Yet I’m aware that my place in life is only feeble and transient, because my rights and freedom to obtain work have been destroyed without a clear basis or reason.

Sometimes my pain is difficult to withstand and I’m uncomfortable about even allowing myself to imagine that my hopes might ever be realised. So I travel through life with uncertainty, without any guarantee from adidas that it would take any responsibility for workers… so it’s difficult for me to obtain work or a regular wage.

Sometimes, to satisfy the basic needs of everyday life like food, paying for electricity, water bills, and phone bills and so on I have to get assistance from charity hand outs or friends who see my situation and take pity on me. But I don’t always rely on these kinds of handouts or the good hearts of friends. Sometimes I just endure the feeling of hunger because I can’t afford to buy food. I certainly don’t have money to buy food of the kind of nutrition that I should have each day.

But even in this situation I always try to be optimistic and do the best that I can, like I always look for information on job opportunities and apply to work in Jakarta, Bogor, and Tangerang—mostly in Banten province. At the same time, sometimes I feel this is all useless because I’m held back by my age. At 32, I’m considered old for new factory positions. I also feel disadvantaged because of the fact that I have only minimum education where as I have to compete with new graduates—some even university graduates. Ironically, whenever I apply to other shoe factories I feel like I’m always rejected because of my sacking from Panarub, yet shoe production is the area in which I have the most experience.

I feel things are especially tough now that when ever I seem to visit a traditional market or grocery store I’m constantly shocked and surprised by the increased price of goods and services. Everywhere I look the price of basic goods has sky rocketed- like the price of rice, cooking oil, sugar, school fees… it especially worries me that health care is so expensive since I’m in such a difficult economic situation right now. As an example, I was hospitalised with Malaria from the 16th to the 19th of April this year. The price of medicine and treatment was totally beyond my means. But in this dark situation, friends provided a ray of light- I was so fortunate that they were able to help out.

Although I’m not working anymore at the moment, I’m still involved with GSBI (Association of Indonesian Unions) activities and I remain committed to developing and promoting GSBI especially in Tangerang district, Banten. I helped form the alliance FPR (People’s Struggle Front) and unite several different unions throughout Tangerang to genuinely advance the social, economic and political rights of workers, standing up for workers in opposing all forms of oppression. GSBI’s imperative is to always struggle for change amidst the chronic and extraordinary suffering of the Indonesian working class. GSBI must work to relive the suffering of the working class, especially those who are oppressed and marginalised.

So while obtaining work and a secure wage is a my personal hope and ambition (so that I can fulfill my own living needs and to help improve economic situation of my parents)- it is also consistent with my commitment to a broader struggle in the interests of social economic and political rights for the working class.

Send a message to Suwandi…

Suwandi is looking forward to hearing what others think about the situation faced by factory workers in Indonesia and elsewhere. He is also happy to answer any of your questions. But please be patient as it may take him a few days to respond.

Mencari kehidupan yang lebih sejahtera

Saya adalah korban PHK. PT.Panarub Industry memecat saya sejak tanggal 13 Januari 2006.
